1 in 4 Construction Workers Say Childcare Issues are Harming Their Career

As we enter the third lockdown and schools close, many workers find themselves at a crossroads, having to decide whether to prioritise their career or childcare. Where many industries can adapt to working from home conditions, for those that work in construction, this is not possible.

According to a recent survey, one in four construction workers feel that a lack of childcare has harmed their career, meaning that they are missing out on the opportunities out there due to home-schooling responsibilities.

The findings come as the government faces increasing calls for more construction staff to be classed as key workers.

While schools are open for children of key workers, little childcare support is being offered to children of construction workers. However, the government has announced that construction workers working on “critical transport and border infrastructure” projects can put their children in school ‘hubs’.

The survey also uncovered that 49% of professionals working in construction and property were using flexible working arrangements during the pandemic. One in four said that they would have to look for another job if flexible working was not an option. However, close to 30% of those working flexibly said their career progression had been compromised because of the arrangements, while 46% said that isolation was the main drawback of flexible working.
