4 Things You Should Never Include in Your CV

Having worked in the recruitment business for decades, it is safe to say that we know what employers do and do not want to see on CVs. While the internet is full of content and advice on building the perfect CV, you would be surprised at just how many people get it wrong, including things they shouldn’t and limiting their chances of making a good first impression.

In this blog, we focus on a few of our CV-related pet-hates, providing you with some advice on what not to include.

Slang

Using slang words and colloquialisms can give the impression that you are not taking your job search seriously. This is why using clear, well-written English is advised.

Typos and bad grammar

A CV with lots of typos and bad grammar may be overlooked in favour of one without. Our advice would be to ensure you proofread your CV and get someone else to do the same. This will ensure any silly spelling mistakes or typos are picked up before it is sent to a potential employer.

Negative experiences with employers

The truth is, many of us have had bad experiences with bosses and managers. However, using your CV to share those gripes and issues is not the way to do things. In your ‘Employment History’ section of your CV, simply state the job you occupied, your duties, responsibilities and the dates in which you assumed the role.

Friends and family as references

Too often do we see candidates feature friends or family members as their CV references. This is not a favourable approach. Your CV reference needs to be somebody who can vouch for your professional capabilities in an impartial fashion, not being obliged to talk you up to due to your relationship with them.
