Due to the volatile landscape of the United Kingdom in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the unsettled Brexit negotiations, the internet, the use of the internet and cyber security has arguably never been more important.

As we are forced to embrace working from home, remote working and an increased reliance on technology, we are more reliant on the security of our technology than ever before - which as a result, means the cyber security industry is crying out for more talent.

As a country, we’ve never depended more on technology systems within our home than during the current COVID-19 outbreak. Millions of employees up and down the UK are working from home, using personal devices or work devices to connect to WiFi networks which are potentially insecure, risking their own security and the potential security of their fellow employees and work places too. 

Our UK-based cyber security teams are working incredibly hard to ensure that, at a time where Britain is more vulnerable than ever through its connected technology systems, that technology items do not cause further problems to the safety and security of this country, and indeed the people who reside within it. 

However, despite the security teams who are hard at work, our technological capabilities and resilience are still being challenged daily thanks to this astronomical increase in remote working, which leaves the UK more vulnerable than ever to cyber crime. Without enough talent working for the cyber security sector to try and combat cyber crime, the UK’s cyber defences are weak- which is why it’s so important that the cyber security industry is recruiting quickly and efficiently to fight the fire. 

The UK is set to have 100,000 empty cybersecurity jobs by 2022 according to the Global Information Security Workforce. With the pandemic nowhere near over, and the future of said pandemic almost impossible to predict, this could be a simple scratch on the surface of what could be a staggering problem for the industry, and we might see several more vacant cyber security jobs than this already quite staggering number. 

In essence, not only has the UK never needed a strong army of cyber security professionals more, but there has simply never been a more appropriate time to begin, develop or switch your career to the cyber security industry.
