How to Write the Perfect CV to Bag a Job in Construction

Receiving hundreds of CVs from construction workers each day, it is fair to say that we have seen our fair share of resumes, understanding what features a CV has to employ in order to grab attention. With the CV aiming to impress prospective employers, it is essential that much thought is put into both content and structure, needing to work with a clean design that clearly celebrate your experience and potential within the construction industry.

If you are at the stage where you are either building or refreshing your CV, allow our top tips to help.

Think as your CV as a shop window

While a saying that we have slightly exhausted over the years 'think as your CV as a shop window' will never age, with CVs needing to boast good presentation and engage readers. With it being your first point of content, the desired impact needs to be considered before you begin to type.

How to structure a CV

Your CV needs to entice, providing snippets of information in order to make the reader hungry to read more. Our suggested flow is as follows:

*Name

*Contact information - this should include your telephone number, email and address.

*Elevator pitch - this is a brief synopsis of your skills, experience and personality. This should be around 3 sentences and used as sort of elevator pitch.

*Employment history – start with your most recent post, showcasing the length of employment, duties and responsibilities. Try to ensure there are no gaps in your employment as this can have a negative impact. For example, if you had a year out through illness or were on maternity/paternity leave, be sure to state that.

*Education - here you should list your qualifications in order of latest achievement i.e. degree (or higher), A Levels, then GCSEs (or equivalents). *Interests and Hobbies – this section should provide a window into you as an individual, showing potential employees the type of person you are outside of work. For example, do you have children, are you a keen sports fan?

*References – it is important that you always close your CV with references, featuring the details of people that can verify your past professional endeavours.

Tone of voice

The tone of voice you use when writing your CV should really compliment the post you are applying for. For example, if you are applying for a Site Manager role you will want to come across as assertive, confident and highly knowledgeable in your field. It is important that you wear the hat of the employer, thinking about what they would want to see when sifting through a huge pile of CVs.
