Nearly Half of UK Construction Jobs Require Digital Skills

The construction industry has changed shape dramatically over the past 20 years, with new technology having an impact on what we build and the way we build it. From smart sites that use drones to keep track of progress to robo-bricklayers supporting builders, tech is now central to almost all construction projects. 

This has had a big influence on the skills employers want to see when recruiting for construction professionals. In fact, digital skills are a requirement in nearly half of construction jobs. 

This was uncovered in a recent research project conducted by training provider, The Knowledge Acadamy.  

Analysing eight million job adverts, they uncovered that digital skills were required for top, middle and low-level construction jobs.  

However, not all construction employers have the skills modern employers require. There are many reasons for this being the case.  

72% of those surveyed said that they simply did not have the time to build skills. 67% said they were too lazy/tired and 51% thought digital courses were too expensive.  

Joseph Scott, a spokesperson from the TheKnowledgeAcademy.com, commented:  

“It’s that time of the year where individuals are contemplating their careers and wondering if their job is giving them enough fulfilment. Those who conclude that they are unhappy in their current position will undoubtedly search for new opportunities. 

“Given that most industries have now been revolutionised by technology, companies need employees who can comfortably use different digital tools, programmes and software to drive business performance as well as achieve set objectives. Those entering the job market need to be aware of this, as this research clearly shows that certain industries are more demanding of particular digital skills than others”.
