Social Distancing on Construction Sites: Advice and Tips

With the construction industry being one of the biggest contributors to the UK economy, Boris Johnson is understandably eager to reopen sites and get projects moving forward. However, with Coronavirus still at large and no vaccination yet found, social distancing is the only armour construction workers have to protect themselves on site.

Here at Rhinorecruitment.com, the safety of construction workers is hugely important to us. This is why below we detail the best ways to implement social distancing measures on site.

Introduce staggered working hours and breaks

The objective of social distancing is to limit interaction at every given opportunity. Any site looking to reopen should introduce staggered working hours and breaks, ridding of the morning rush and crowds of staff leaving for the day at the same time.

Monitor site access points

Site gates should be locked to ensure nobody can just waltz on site. Ideally, gates and access points should be manned by personnel. These individuals can stop every person attempting entry and question them on the nature on their visit. From there, they can deem their visit essential or non-essential.

Implement a sign-in process

Most construction sites preparing to open are implementing a sign-in process, asking building inspectors, sub-contractors, utilities suppliers and any other vital visitors to sign-in and agree to adhere to social distancing rules whilst on the site.

Allow for remote working (where possible)

Although the majority of people working in the construction industry will need to be on site, there are some exceptions. For instance, workers in HR, sales and marketing who just need a phone and computer can realistically conduct their tasks remotely.

Ask delivery drivers to remain in their vehicles

If the load will allow it, delivery drivers delivering to construction sites should remain in their vehicles, limiting the amount of contact site workers have with other people.
